Full Size Photoshop Canvas on a Mac Travis February 20th, 2009

So i recently acquired a new uni body macbook and have since been getting used to the switch from windows to mac. I gotta say I’m very much loving the OS X experience and the multi-touch gestures on the giant new track pad. That being said, one of the things that was really annoying me was the default modal disjointed photoshop experience. I like all my apps to be in a nice neat window container.

Here’s the default “disjointed” photoshop setup on a mac

Now i wanna contain all those wild modal panels into one cohesive application window. So i choose “Application Frame” From the “Window” menu like so:

That leaves me with a beautifully framed and contained photoshop with a full size canvas. This is much easier to work with since i am no longer accidentally clicking the desktop and losing my application focus.

Keep in mind that this is CS4 and your mileage may vary depending on what version you are using.

I can’t speak for CS4 as I’m still running 3 but in all PhotoShops previous you can toggle your screen view by simply hitting the ‘F’ key. I particularly like this feature when I want to step back and critique my design or share with others. I’ll tap ‘f’ until I get the black frame and then hit ‘tab’ to make my tools hide, all that’s left is a full screen of the image.

I just switched to a Mac a few days ago and this has been driving me NUTS – thanks so much for posting this – now I can stop shaking my fist at my beautiful new MBP. ;)

OH SCHWEET!!! You just made my day!!!

I’ve been searching on forums all over and asking on youtube how to fix this issue but no success. I got so pissed off with the Mac version of Photoshop mainly because of this disjoint that I often switch back to Windows for any photoshop work.

    You Rock!!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I too am a former PC user and have done graphics on PCs for about 10 years. This issue was driving me crazy — thanks so much for solving it for me!

Dude. You have no idea how many months this was ruining my day when I wanted to go to my mac on photoshop. I just couldn’t get used to the default non-framed. I thought, “are they effin’ out of their minds?”

You, my friend, have saved me some heartache.
